Title:...

Farmers' perceptions and management of plant viruses in vegetables and legumes in tropical and subtropical Asia

Incidence of vector-transmitted virus diseases and the damage caused to vegetable crops by these diseases are reported to be increasing in countries with tropical and subtropical conditions. Virus-resistant crops and an integrated approach to crop management including appropriate control of plant-virus insect-vectors could reduce the problem. However, in developing countries, such a strategy is rarely applied effectively. We surveyed 800 growers of chili, tomato and mungbean in India, Thailand and Vietnam to understand what farmers know about plant viruses, their perceptions about yield damage, the control methods they choose to apply and the perceived effectiveness of these. Farmers regarded their economic losses from pests and diseases to be very substantial. Only a minority of them knew that certain disease symptoms were probably being caused by a plant virus and even fewer knew about the role of insect vectors in its spread. Farmers mostly relied on synthetic pesticid...

An experimental investigation of energy absorption in TRIP steel under impact three-point bending deformation

TRIP (Transformation-induced Plasticity) steel is nowadays in widespread use in the automobile industry because of their favorable mechanical properties such as high strength, excellent formability and toughness because of strain-induced martensitic transformation. Moreover, when TRIP steel is applied to the components of the vehicles, it is expected that huge amount of kinetic energy will be absorbed into both plastic deformation and martensitic transformation during the collision. Basically, bending deformation due to buckling is one of the major crash deformation modes of automobile structures. Thus, an investigation of energy absorption during bending deformation at high impact velocity for TRIP steel is indispensable. Although TRIP steel have particularly attracted the recent interest of the scientific community, just few studies can be found on the energy absorption characteristic of TRIP steel, especially at impact loading condition. In present study, experimental ...

Vietnamese compounds show an anti-frequency effect in visual lexical decision

Although Vietnamese has a long history of linguistic research, as yet no psycholinguistic studies addressing lexical processing in this language have been carried out. This paper is the first to investigate lexical processing in Vietnamese, and this addresses the reading of Vietnamese bi-syllabic compound words. A large single-subject experiment with 20,000 words was complemented by a smaller multiple-subject experiment with 550 words. We report the novel finding of an inhibitory, anti-frequency effect of Vietnamese compounds’ constituents. We show that this anti-frequency effect is predicted by a computational model of lexical processing grounded in naive discrimination learning. We also show that predictors derived from this model provide a much better fit to the observed reaction times than traditional lexical-distributional predictors. Effects of the density of the compound graph, previously observed for English, were replicated for Vietnamese. Furthermore, tone diac...

Correlation between charge transfer and exchange coupling in carbon-based magnetic materials

Several forms of carbon-based magnetic materials, i.e. single radicals, radical dimers, and alternating stacks of radicals and diamagnetic molecules, have been investigated using density-functional theory with dispersion correction and full geometry optimization. Our calculated results demonstrate that the C31H15 (R4) radical has a spin of However, in its [R4]2 dimer structure, the net spin becomes zero due to antiferromagnetic spin-exchange between radicals. To avoid antiferromagnetic spin-exchange of identical face-to-face radicals, eight alternating stacks, R4/D2m/R4 (with m = 3-10), were designed. Our calculated results show that charge transfer (Δn) between R4 radicals and the diamagnetic molecule D2m occurs with a mechanism of spin exchange (J) in stacks. The more electrons that transfer from R4 to D2m, the stronger the ferromagnetic spin-exchange in stacks. In addition, our calculated results show that Δn can be tailored by adjusting the electron affinity (Ea) of D...

Karyotype analysis of Korean Lilium maximowiczii regal populations

Detailed karyotypes analyses were carried out in 30 populations of Korean L. maximowiczii Regel. The populations were constituted with 43 diploids (2n=2x=24) and 38 triploids (2n=3x=36). The lengths of mitotic metaphase chromosomes ranged from 13.22 μm to 25.18 μm, with a total length of 203.78 μm in diploid plants. In triploid plants, the chromosome lengths ranged from 14.28 μm to 27.75 μm, with a total length of 214.42 μm. There was only one cytotype identified by karyotype analysis in both diploid and triploid populations. The basic set of somatic chromosome complement consists of two metacentrics (chromosomes a and b), two subtelocentrics (chromosomes c and d), and eight telocentrics (chromosomes e, f, g, h, i, j, k, and 1) in both diploid and triploid populations. Four loci of 45S rRNA genes were observed by FISH, and three of the four loci correspond to the secondary constrictions. One additional 45S rRNA locus was observed by FISH at the near telomere of the long a...

Review on spatio-temporal multiscale phenomena in TRIP steels and enhancement of its energy absorption

Among various materials used for structures, TRIP steel has attracted the interest of the scientific community because TRIP steel indicates better performances such as formability, toughness and energy absorption as well as strength and ductility than other kinds of advanced high strength steel because of strain-induced martensitic transformation. From a microstructural point of view, two mechanisms are usually considered to explain the high performances: the Magee and theGreenwood-Johnson effects: however, it has not been proven yet. On the other hand, even though TRIP steel shows the excellent energy absorption under the high-speed deformation, the amount of martensite is very small by an influence of the heat generation with plastic transformation. In order to solve this paradox and explainmacroscopic performances from the microscopic deformation mechanism, a concept of a spatio-temporal multiscale should be introduced. In this paper, research works done by the one of...
